KWC Gets $10,000 Grant from OMHS
KWC recently received a $10,000 grant from Owensboro Medical Health System to purchase Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) for campus. Along with CPR, AEDs dramatically increase the chances of survival for individuals who undergo a sudden cardiac arrest.
The project began when Joe Lewis, a pre-med junior who is also a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (Basic) and a paramedic student, brought to President King’s attention that KWC owns just two AEDs to cover a 63-acre campus. An AED must be used within three minutes for greatest success.
With the grant from OMHS’ Community Benefit Program, KWC will place the devices in more accessible areas to better serve the needs of students, faculty, and staff. “The additions of AEDs will be a much needed resource as the campus continues to expand and evolve in future years,” Lewis said. “I am grateful that OMHS could make this endeavor possible.”
The AEDs will be mounted in wall cabinets throughout campus, and residence life staff, athletic coaches and faculty and staff will undergo training to learn how to operate them.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 92 percent of people who experience sudden cardiac arrest outside a hospital do not survive. Communities with comprehensive CPR and AED programs, however, have achieved survival rates of 40 percent or higher.
KWC’s AED program will benefit the more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff on campus, as well as the hundreds of members of the Owensboro community who visit campus each year for presentations, programs and sporting events.
The AED grant is part of nearly $200,000 that OMHS gave to Owensboro organizations in its second round of Community Benefit funding this year.
A Christmas Tradition at KWC
Kentucky Wesleyan students recently participated in an annual holiday tradition at KWC – the Hanging of the Greens in front of the Winchester fireplace.
They gathered to decorate festive Christmas trees and enjoy holiday refreshments including hot chocolate, cider and cookies.
Five different student organizations set up their own Christmas trees, with Student Life raising a 12-foot tree in the Winchester Rotunda.
Contest winners were as follows:
Most Creative Tree: Sigma Alpha Mu
Most Festive Tree: Circle K Club
Prettiest Tree: KWC Cheerleaders
Overall Champion Tree: Kappa Delta
If you’re on campus, stop by the fireplace to get in the holiday mood!

KWC to Celebrate Veterans’ Day
On this Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11), KWC will honor students, faculty and staff who have served in our country’s Armed Forces.
A brief program will be held at 12:15 p.m.in front of the administration building. The program will include special music by The Halos (today’s version of The Andrews Sisters) and remarks by Dr. Ken Ayers. Molly Troutman will sing “The Star-Spanged Banner” and “God Bless America,” and KWC will recognize special guests Dr. Emil Ahnell, Don Davenport and Dr. Gus Paris.
Large yellow ribbons (signifying support of American troops) will decorate the front columns of the administration building as well as trees on the front lawn.
Come out this Veterans Day to show your support and thankfulness for those who have defended our country.
UPDATE: A Veteran’s Day message to the KWC community from Major Tim Payment ’97:
”We, as Americans, owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the men and
women who have given so much of their lives to the freedoms we enjoy.
We take for granted the suffering and tremendous amount of personal
hardship of a few that has given us personal comfort in our lives.
We Soldiers are truly honored to serve the United States. When we are
told “Thank You,” we think, “Thank you for giving us something bigger than
ourselves to fight for.” We do not expect recognition for our service but
we do demand respect for our Brothers and Sisters who have made the
ultimate sacrifice in Defense of our (every American’s) way of life –
the Freedoms that we enjoy.”
